"Warning, old man flashback! I remember when with $400 you could outfit yourself from head to toe in boots, bindings, board, jacket and pants"

Love it!!! One of the main reasons I don't ski as much as I used to is that everything from sticks, lift-tickets, and even bowls of chili have become so ridiculously expensive. While the price comparison to mtn. bikes and custom longboards may hold a little water, once you make those purchases you're pretty much good to go. Even if you do make the Burton investment, you still have a long way$ to go before you're on the hill.

interesting. it seems like something like the Grain, http://www.grainsurfboards.com model would work really well for snowboarders. i've seen links on various forums like TGR, BMB, Sierra for do-it-yourselfers... and have seen some that people have totally pulled out of their ass and some that are pure awesomeness. i'll be on the look out for more links but i think with a bit of googling you can beat me to the punch. snowboard construction/design hasn't really changed in years (contrary to what you read)... there are tweaks and improvements, but we're settling in on what works and what doesn't work.

viva la garage!

Totally non-linear comment here, but being from the surfing side of things and you making the longboard price analogy, I had a snowboard question for you or anyone reading.

Have you seen many DIY snowboards around? I know a handful of guys who shape/ride their own surfboards and have come across a few sites that sell supplies for building your own snowboard (http://www.boardcrafter.com/) and it seems intriguing to me, only because I have big-ass feet and toe-drag is always an issues but the options are limited with wide boards. Seems like it would be easy to implement a lot of this tech for way cheaper if you DIY.

Good to see Burton still holding strong with their proprietary binding bullshit.
