LionizePride.com: An Interactive E-Newsletter for Surfers

Sign-up, contribute content, and have it distributed worldwide for free

ORLANDO — NOVEMBER 5, 2008 — Lionize PR, an Orlando-based public relations and marketing firm specializing in the surfing community, today announces the launch of LionizePride.com. E-mailed to opt-in parties throughout the world, the e-newsletter’s content will be a combination of major news and reader submissions with embedded links if available. Sign-up and provide content at www.lionizepride.com.

“LionizePride.com is an avenue for publicity for those who can’t or don’t want to write a press release, don’t have the resources to pay someone to write one, or don’t know how to get it front of people who could read it,” stated Ryan Marks, president of Lionize PR. “While we’ll incorporate major news into the mix, I hope it will be utilized by the brands, the people and the organizations that could benefit the most from free publicity.”

Based on the concept that lions form social bonds called prides to hunt, educate and survive, LionizePride.com was born. By spreading the word about recent happenings, surfers have an avenue to contribute to the community instantaneously and have it broadcast worldwide.

“What I’ve found is that there is a ton of people who contribute to the surfing culture, but don’t necessarily have a medium to broadcast their successes,” stated Marks. “I want to give a voice to all those people in the most effective manner possible.”

E-mail is still the most effective form of marketing based upon studies by JupiterResearch with 87% of the online community spending their time reading e-mails. That is 17% more than the next most popular reason to use the Internet, which is for search.

Editor’s Note: For stickers, electronic images and samples contact Ryan Marks at 407.242.8548 or ryan@lionizepr.com.

Gagnon and Rodriquez capture gold

GAGNON AND RODRIGUEZ DISPLAY TEXTBOOK PERFECTION CAPTURING GOLD AT THE LG ACTION SPORTS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

SEATTLE, Washington (November 3, 2008) – The capacity crowd at KeyArena experienced a textbook display of Skateboard Vert and Street skills when Pierre-Luc Gagnon (Montreal, Canada) and Paul Rodriguez (Tarzana, Calif.) skated to Gold medals on the final day of the LG Action Sports World Championships.

Gagnon repeated as Skateboard Vert LG World Champion, redefining the word ‘domination’ by claiming yet another major title in 2008. In a 5-run, 10-wall competition, he produced runs that contained only one blank wall as he turned out one banger after another. His 360-flip mute to fakie, which won him best trick earlier this season, amazed the crowd, and his technical board tricks racked up the points to bring him $30,000 to add to his winnings this year.

“It feels great to win the LG World Championships again. I’ve been having a great time all season,” said Gagnon. “I’ve been on the road and practicing a lot, riding everyday. When I get to competitions all the practice I’ve done helps make it seem almost like any other day.”

Winning Silver was good friend Danny Mayer (Omaha, Nebraska) whose kick flip 540, the hardest trick of the day, thrilled the crowd and gave him a firm hold on second place after his second run. Not more than three people industry wide can perform the trick with the technical skill of Mayer, making it no wonder that tonight he finds himself $20,000 richer.

Third place seemed like Bucky Lasek’s (Baltimore, Maryland) after producing a few solid runs, but, like his nickname describes, the “pitbull on wheels,” Sandro Dias (Santo Andre, Brazil) came through on his final run to overcome Lasek and win the Bronze. After losing it on his 10th wall twice in the two previous runs, Dias stuck his final run which included one of the highest 540s ever. It was enough to pocket the $10,000 third place prize.

The Skateboard Street contest rivaled the Vert competition in excitement when the top 8 men of a 14-man field took to the 6-foot drop staircase to show off their skills in the final round. For ten minutes of controlled chaos they pushed their limits and threw one trick after another, cranking the level of skill beyond expectation. In the end, ‘textbook perfection’ is what took the title; Paul Rodriguez (Tarzana, Calif.) earned the Gold with a score of 95.75.

“He’s a total machine,” commented the judges. “His switch stance is as good as most people’s regular stance, and tonight he landed twice as many tricks as his competition.”

“I went for some tricks I normally wouldn’t try, “ said Rodriquez. “You just do what you have to do to win.”

Greg Lutzka (Milwaukee, Wis.) captured second place and Rodolfo Ramos, the 2007 LG Skateboard Street World Champion, took third.

All of the action of the 6th annual LG Action Sports World Championships produced by ASA Entertainment can be seen on CBS Sports on Sunday, December 7th at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, December 13th at 1:00 p.m. and on Saturday, December 20th at 1:00 p.m. All times are Eastern. Local listings should be consulted for broadcast details in specific areas. The event will also air in more than 180 countries worldwide via 25 networks.

BESTWICK, DHERS WIN GOLD AT
LG ACTION SPORTS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

SEATTLE, Wash. (November 1, 2008) –

Day two of the LG Action Sports World Championships brought the pros of BMX Vert, BMX Street, Men’s and Women’s Inline Street Skating, as well as Skateboard Vert to the fans and made them jump to their feet in celebration as the athletes laid down some of the most spectacular runs of the season. The year’s most dominant stars in BMX Vert and BMX Street, Jamie Bestwick (Darby, England) and Daniel Dhers (Caracas, Venezuela) respectively, continued their winning ways in 2008 and captured the gold medal in their disciplines, as Jenna Downing (Barnsley, England) and Franky Morales (Miami Beach, Fla.), took the gold in Inline Skating Street. Skateboard Vert also saw the usual suspects finish the Prelims at the top of the heap, with Pierre-Luc Gagnon (Montreal, Canada) leading the way.
The afternoon began with the Skateboard Vert Prelims and a 16-man field that needed to be whittled to eight for the Sunday afternoon Finals. The tops stars were in play, giving their best in an attempt to advance to the Finals. By the round’s end, Gagnon, Sandro Dias (Santo Andre, Brazil), Bucky Lasek (Baltimore, Maryland), Danny Mayer (Omaha, Nebraska), Alex Perelson (San Diego, Calif.), Andy Macdonald (San Diego, Calif.), Buster Halterman (Wellsville, Penn.) and Marcelo Bastos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had advanced. On what can only be characterized as a ‘steam roll’, Gagnon comes in as the event’s defending champion and is looking to cap the season with a second consecutive LG World Champion title.
Daniel Dhers has also been rolling through all of 2008 in the Gold medal position and continued to do so today, decisively winning the BMX Street contest with two runs that far exceeded the competition. He pushed himself to the end, even bettering his first round score with his second run.
“I always want to do a good first run. But tonight I realized it’s been a long time since I’ve done two good runs, so I went out there to do it, and it worked.”
The Silver and Bronze medals went to Rob Darden (Greenville, NC) and Dennis Enarson (San Diego, Calif.) in a tiebreaker. Both men produced 90.00 point runs, but Darden turned in an 89.50 point first run, which bested Enarson’s additional run by one point, thereby breaking the tie and securing him second place.
Clearly another highlight of the evening was Jamie Bestwick’s (Darby, England) winning performance in the BMX Vert contest. Bestwick rode to his 5th LG World Championship title in six years. He’s captured the BMX Vert Gold at every LG World Championships he’s attended, missing out on the title in 2006, the only year he did not participate. He soared above the ramp tonight in what was described by announcers as “BMX insanity”, winning the contest with his first run.
“It feels great,” said Bestwick, describing his success. “This Seattle stop is a great one for the ASA [Entertainment] Action Sports World Tour. This event is a lot of fun. There’s a lot of nerves beforehand and everyone is on edge, but it brings out the best in us.”
Bestwick’s domination in BMX has been virtually complete in 2008 with him capturing nearly every major title this year. When asked what he attributes it to, he commented, “I just enjoy riding bikes. I gave up everything – my job, my family, my country – to come here and compete, and that’s what drives me to keep on pushing.”
The Silver medal in BMX Vert went to crowd-pleaser Chad Kagy (Gilroy, Calif.), and Simon Tabron (Newquay, England) received the Bronze medal.
The Inline Skating Street competitions were a definite treat for fans, thrilling the crowds with the creativity and daring of the athletes’ skill and talent. Fallon Heffernan (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.), entered the women’s competition as the leader from Friday’s Prelims, but Jenna Downing landed every trick she attempted in the Finals and solidly rode away with the Gold medal. Heffernan came in second; Fabiola da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) came in third.
“Unbelievable” best describes the men’s Inline Skating Street competition where the athletes pushed the limits of not only themselves, but also the course boundaries. Nineteen year-old David Sizemore (Atlanta, Georgia) back-flipped off the hitching posts and Franky Morales used the neighboring Vert ramp to jump into the Street course, while performing a 540 spin before landing smoothly to the crowds’ cheers in amazement. Not to be outdone, Stephane Alfano (Frejus, France) also launched himself from the Vert ramp, landing a 540 spin as well after two attempts. With just a couple of minutes left to the session, Morales once again jumped from the Vert ramp, spinning through a 900, but failed to execute a successful landing. Nevertheless, after the judges tallied the scores in what was one of the toughest decisions of the evening, Morales came out the winner.
“I was just trying to win,” said Morales when asked how he came up with jumping from the Vert ramp. “I was trying to do something big, and I saw the ramp – it’s what’s big in here – and I said, ‘That’s it.’” The Silver medal went to Alfano, and Sizemore accepted the Bronze.
The LG Action Sports World Championships resumes Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. featuring a day of skateboarding contests. Skateboard Street Prelims start at 2:00 p.m., followed by Skateboard Vert Finals and Skateboard Street Finals thereafter. Hoobastank will entertain the crowd to cap the weekend’s activities.

Inline Vert Finals Results in a Woman Making the Podium for the First Time in Event History

SEATTLE, Wash. (October 31, 2008) – The sixth annual LG Action Sports World Championships produced by ASA Entertainment (LG World Championships) thrilled a raucous Seattle crowd tonight at KeyArena with the Inline Skating Vert Finals and BMX Street Prelims.

With two high-flying, spectacularly consistent runs, Fabiola da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil), the only woman competing against the men during any of the contests at the championships, flipped and grinded herself into third place – her highest finish ever in Inline Skating Vert at the LG World Championships against the men.

“I am so excited I almost started crying!” said da Silva. “I didn’t expect to make the podium.”

Joining Fabiola in the winners’ circle were Shane Yost (Lauceton, Tasmania), finding himself as the silver medalist for the second year in a row, and Marco de Santi (Sao Paulo), whose double-back flips and double-back flat spins pushed his scores through the 90.00 point mark to 91.25 and decisively secured him the gold medal. De Santi took home $12,500 for his win.

“I came here to do what I gotta do to win,” said de Santi to the crowd. “I did it in my first run, so I tried to go harder in my second run. It [the run] came out the same, so it’s all good.”

BMX Street also enjoyed opening night status, qualifying eight men to the finals, which will take place Saturday afternoon, November 1st. Wade is the defending BMX Street champion, so he’ll be battling to hold on to that title tomorrow afternoon.

2008 LG Action Sports World Championships

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

The Game and Pennywise to perform live at LG Action Sports World Championships at KeyArena – Oct. 31 & Nov. 1st. Tickets to the Season-ending Action Sports Event include Live Concerts

LOS ANGELES (October 13, 2008) – When the LG Action Sports World Tour produced by ASA Entertainment stops in Seattle’s KeyArena later this month on October 31-November 2nd, not only will fans be rewarded with an intense competition between 175 of today’s best action sports pros, they will also be entertained each night with a free concert from musical groups popular to this genre. Today, ASA announces three groups who will perform during the weekend. The Game, MxPx and Pennywise will perform on the Maxell Music Stage - The Game on Friday night, October 31st, MxPx on Saturday afternoon, November 1st and Pennywise on Saturday evening.

Jayceon Terrell Taylor, better known by his stage name The Game, is an American rapper signed to Geffen Records. He rose to fame in 2005 with the success of his debut album, The Documentary, and his two Grammy nominations. Since then, he has been considered the driving force in bringing back the West Coast hip hop scene and competing with many of his East Coast counterparts. The Game is the only West Coast solo artist to release a multi-platinum album “The Documentary” since Dr. Dre’s 1999 album, “2001”. Aside from releasing two albums that debuted at number one on the United World Charts and the Billboard 200, The Game has gained notoriety for the hip hop feuds he has taken part in. Presently he’s enjoying the success of his single “My Life” featuring Lil Wayne.

MxPx, originally known as Magnified Plaid, is a punk band that was started in 1992 by three 15 year-old teenagers in Bremerton, Washington. The three original members were classmates in high school. In their 16-year existence they’ve recorded 8 studio albums and released 20 singles. Their first album, “Pokinatcha” came out while they were still in high school. In 2006 the City of Bremerton gave the group keys to the city for their contributions to the community and their song “Move to Bremerton”, which was used in the city’s marketing efforts. After enjoying tours in the U.K. and Australia earlier this year as part of the “Good to Go Tour”, and a few recent shows in Canada and the U.S., the band is planning to start writing and recording a ninth album in January 2009.

Pennywise, the American punk band that began in 1988, derived its name from the monster in the bestselling book by Stephen King, “It.” The band is made up of members Jim Lindberg, Fletcher Dragge, Byron McMackin and Randy Bradbury (since 1996). Pennywise has produced nine studio albums in their career, one every two years. The most recent album, “Reason to Believe” was released in March 2008 on MySpace Records. The punk rock, melodic hardcore sound of their second album “Unknown Road” became an underground hit which made the band a force on the punk rock scene.

Project Blue Gets Famous

Famous Green Label Surf Wax Joins The Project BLUE Initiative to Benefit Surfrider Foundation

San Clemente, CA, September 7, 2008 – Project BLUE, the environmental initiative established to raise funds in support of the non-profit Surfrider Foundation’s mission to protect the oceans and beaches, would like to welcome Famous Wax into the family. As part of their support, a portion of the proceeds from Famous’ petrochemical-free Green Label Surf Wax will be donated to Surfrider. The latest member of the project BLUE initiative, Famous joins industry leaders Billabong, DAKINE, Electric, Nixon, O’Neill and Reef in their ongoing support of clean water and safe beaches worldwide.

Forward thinking and environmentally conscious, Famous represents an ideal partner for project BLUE. After two years of R&D, Famous was able to create the Green Label line of wax to be both environmentally friendly and at the same time, perform to the standards of the Famous surf team. In addition to having superior grip in the water, Famous Green Label Surf Wax is biodegradable, 100 percent organic and non-toxic.

“We developed the Green Label wax in the mindset of wanting to do our part and help Earth conscious surfers take a step towards limiting their global footprint by offering them an alternative to petroleum based surf wax,” commented Sam Sciortino, owner of Famous Wax. “When we were first preparing to introduce the Green Label wax to retail, partnering with project BLUE seemed like a natural evolution for our company. As surfers, we all need to do what we can to keep the oceans and beaches clean, joining the project BLUE initiative and helping Surfrider is just one way we’re trying at Famous.”

Famous has taken steps to make the packaging of their wax more environmentally as well. Green Label wax is wrapped in FSC certified recycled paper and uses soy ink in the printing process.

“Famous stepping up for project BLUE provides one more outlet for surfers to support Surfrider and the environment through conscious decision making in their regular routines. Famous may be a smaller company when compared to the other project BLUE partners, but their support is a great example of how little steps can lead to big changes,” said Vipe Desai, brand strategist at Propaganda HQ and founder of the project BLUE initiative. “Project BLUE isn’t a showcase for companies trying to out green each other. What we are doing is providing easy options for people to plug into Surfrider with minimal effort. If everyone took little steps towards helping the environment, we’d see big changes in the oceans.”

Famous Green Label Surf Wax is available in five temperature ranges (including base coast) and is currently at better surf shops nationwide. More information on Famous Wax can be found at www.famouswax.com.

Action Sports World Tour concludes in Greater Cincinnati!

Big Tricks and Fan Favorites Preview the LG Action Sports World Championships

CINCINNATI, Ohio (October 5, 2008) — The final stop on the 2008 Action Sports World Tour (ASWT) concluded tonight at the Bank of Kentucky Center on Northern Kentucky University with fan favorites capturing the top prize in their discipline and the pros pushing the sport to the next level with tricks that far surpassed the expectations of the spectators and the judges.

Vert ramp action started the evening, with 16 men competing in a BMX vert contest that showcased the flair of favorite Jamie Bestwick (Darby, UK) and saw him ride away with the $10,000 first place prize. Although at 37 he was one of the oldest riders in the competition, Bestwick’s talent and skill never wavered; his execution was flawless. Tonight, perfection was necessary in order to win, for Steven McCann (Melbourne, Australia) and Simon Tabron’s (Newquay, England) rides were equally as impressive as Bestwick’s. McCann’s remarkable full-pull presentation rewarded him with second place, while Tabron effortlessly landed the 900 for which he has become known and finished in third.

Pierre-Luc Gagnon (Montreal, Canada) continued his winning ways in 2008 and rode to victory in the skateboard vert contest, confidently nailing multiple 720s and back to back technical spin tricks in a single run that left no question as to who was the event’s winner. The new 10-wall format (versus the usual 45-second run) worked well for “PLG”, allowing him to plan his performance and turn out the run he had been envisioning.

“That last run I did was great,” PLG said after his win. “I have been struggling with the Mountain Dew Tour ramps all season, but I love this ASWT ramp. It was amazing to pull off that run on this ramp. And, I like the format too. I can plan what I want to do and not worry about the time.”

San Diego, California’s 17 year-old Alex Perelson took the silver medal, and veteran Danny Mayer (Omaha, Neb.) finished in third.

Closing the night was the Big Air BMX Triple Jump contest that brought fans to their feet several times in admiration. With his first run of the night, Rob Darden (Greenville, NC) successfully rode the 165 foot long course performing three, exciting big-air stunts, then re-jumped the second jump, heading back toward the starting ramp. He is one of only two riders to jump back in the opposite direction and by the competition’s end he had completed this stunt in all three of his runs. Darden was rewarded with the Big Air BMX Triple Jump title and $10,000 for his efforts.

“I ride at a skate park that is built that way, where you can ride forward and backward in a single run. The only difference here is that the jumps are taller and you can’t see the landing. But the quarterpipe on this course gives you the speed you need and makes it easier to do it,” explained Darden. “I just went out to have a good time, tried it, and it worked out.”

Always a contender, Mike Spinner (Miami, Fla.), triple tailwhipped his way into second place, and 19 year-old Zack Warden of O’Fallon, Illinois finished third. Warden performed one of the night’s most exciting tricks when he landed a bike-flip 360, a trick he calls the “iron lotus”. The only rider to have ever landed the trick, Warden secured the bronze medal.

Providing the wow-factor of the Big Air BMX Triple Jump contest was T. J. Ellis with his second run of the evening. Turning in a first run during which he successfully performed a no-handed front flip, Ellis nailed a double backflip and surprised not only the crowd and the judges, but also himself.

“I’ve done it before on dirt courses, but never on this course. I just thought I’d try it and it worked!” The double backflip helped Ellis to advance to the Semifinals, which saw further attempts at the trick fail and keep him from advancing to the Finals.

The Cincinnati Action Sports World Tour event was the final qualifier before the prestigious LG Action Sports World Championships on October 31- November 2 in Seattle, Washington. KeyArena will see 175 of action sports pros gather in Emerald City to determine the best action sports athletes of the year.

CBS Sports will air ASA Entertainment’s Cincinnati Action Sport World Tour stop on November 8th. Please consult your local listings for the times in your area.
