First-Ever High-Performance Recycled Polyurethane Surfboard Blanks Developed,
Pilot Program Will Repurpose Previously Unusable Surfboard and Wetsuit Waste

San Clemente, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2009) – Business partners and surf industry veterans,
Joey Santley and Steve Cox introduced two first-of-their-kind revolutionary
endeavors, Green Foam Blanks and ReSurf Recycling, at the Action Sports Retailer
(ASR) trade show in San Diego, Calif. on Jan. 22 – 24. Both organizations, which
received high praise at ASR, are founded on the platform of creating a “greener”
method of manufacturing surfboards, disposing of hazardous surfboard waste and
ultimately leading to more environmentally sound urban communities through the
repurposing of previously unusable and somewhat toxic waste.

With deep roots in the surf industry, both Santley and Cox recognized southern
California as an epicenter for surfboard manufacturers with more than 1,000
surfboards being produced per day between Los Angeles and the Mexico border.
Additionally, nearly 20% of the foam needed to shape each board is rendered as waste
and inevitably ends up in landfills. This unusable foam, partnered with other
somewhat toxic materials required to finish each surfboard, equaled an incalculable
amount of waste coming from the surf industry. These facts, coupled with the belief
that most surfers would be willing to do their part to help cleanse the industry due
to their natural relationship with the ocean and nature, led to the launch of ReSurf
Recycling in late 2007 as a philanthropic endeavor.

Founded with a mission to clean up the industry, ReSurf Recycling offers the
first-ever cohesive plan to recycle all surfboards and the waste associated with
their manufacturing, along with neoprene wetsuit scraps from the cutting room floor.
Urging both surfers and board manufacturers to recycle old boards and manufacturing
waste, ReSurf Recycling has developed a method that recycles somewhat hazardous
surfing-associated materials into numerous products including asphalt for paving
city roads. Additionally, the organization has invented a method of producing 100%
recycled yoga mats made using neoprene scraps generated from wetsuit production and
has recently finalized deals with wetsuit manufacturing giants, O’Neill and
Quiksilver to recycle all of its domestic unused materials. Most importantly, both
recycling methods relieve waste haulers and landfill compliance management companies
from the necessity of filling landfills with surfing’s potentially hazardous

“As co-founder of Green Foam Blanks and ReSurf Recycling, I’m thrilled the nation
has recently sworn in the first surfing president, Barack Obama,” stated Santley.
“We believe our efforts can directly contribute to the country’s environmental
agenda.” Co-partner Steve Cox added, “ReSurf Recycling has literally invented a
system of transforming discarded surfboards and previously unusable waste into
asphalt and concrete that can be used to pave city roads as part of our nation’s
road to recovery. It’s our goal to have surfers driving to the beach on roads paved with their old boards and to recycle theestimated 250 tons of neoprene waste that is created from wetsuit scraps each year!”

With surfer, community and environmental industry support for ReSurf Recycling even
stronger than originally imagined in the first months of operation, Santley and Cox
set out to take their surfboard recycling efforts to the next level and put to rest
a 50-year-old notion that toxic surfboard manufacturing waste and broken and used
board components could not be recycled to create new boards. Using a proprietary,
patent-pending cryogenic methodology and working hand-in-hand with Sid Schneider and
Scott Saunders from Oceanside, Calif.-based foam manufacturer Just Foam, Green Foam
Blanks silenced the naysayers and created the world’s first recycled surfboard
blank. Matt “Mayhem” Biolos of …Lost Surfboards was given the opportunity to
shape the first surfboard using a recycled blank, which is now on display at the
Surfing Heritage Museum in San Clemente, Calif. After being tested by both top
surfers and shapers, Green Foam Blanks have been deemed equal in durability,
lightness and function as current high-performance surfboards made with traditional
polyurethane foam. Following the lead of Biolos, top surfboard manufacturers such as
Channel Islands, Rusty, Doc, Timmy Patterson and Pat Rawson have all shaped recycled
blanks from the company’s first batch and proudly displayed their collective work
for the entire industry to view at the Green Foam Blanks booth during ASR.

“When I first saw the recycled blanks, they reminded me of when recycled paper first
came out, it was a bit rough, but got the job done all while saving resources and
lessening waste. The same can be said for the recycled PU blanks,” said Biolos.
“The blanks are a tad coarse with some imperfections and take a bit of savvy to
finish sanding them, yet for the most part the strength to weight ratio is on
target. The specks of stringer and colored glue dust adds character and defines
their look. Starting immediately, we will offer Green Foam Blanks to anyone who
wishes to get a board made.”

About Green Foam Blanks
Using a proprietary, patent-pending cryogenic methodology, Green Foam Surf Blanks
successfully created the world’s first-ever recycled polyurethane foam surfboard
blank in November 2008, a feat widely considered impossible throughout the surf
industry. Producing eco-friendly foam blanks that are as durable and high
performance as all modern day shapes and materials, Green Foam Blanks has already
provided blanks to some of the industry’s top surfboard manufactures, including Matt
Biolos, Channel Islands, Rusty, Doc, Timmy Patterson and Pat Rawson. Green Foam
Blanks are manufactured at Just Foam in Oceanside, Calif.

About ReSurf Recycling
Established in 2007 as a philanthropic endeavor with a mission to clean up the
industry, ReSurf Recycling is a first-of-its-kind systematic solution to clean surf
industry waste. ReSurf Recycling offers both surfers and shapers convenient methods
to recycle their old boards, wetsuits and manufacturing waste. Highlighting its
unique recycling methods, ReSurf Recycling invented a unique process of recycling
used surfboards into asphalt suitable for paving city roads, as well as recycling
neoprene from used wet suits into yoga mats. ReSurf is endorsed by leading surf and
environmental organizations, including SIMA, the Surfrider Foundation and Montec,
inc (civil engineering).

About Just Foam
Founded in Oceanside, Calif. by Scott Saunders in 2004, Just Foam manufactures top
quality polyurethane surfboard blanks. Beyond supplying top surfboard shapers with
durable foam blanks, Just Foam was originally created as a vehicle to support
community rehabilitation centers by employing individuals from these organizations
and training them with a goal to move them into mainstream employment within the
community. Just Foam teamed up with Green Foam Blanks in 2008 to help produce the
first-ever recycled polyurethane surf blank and is the exclusive manufacturer for
all Green Foam Blanks. Just Foam’s supplies have been approved by the local Fire
Authority and are authorized for use in the manufacturing industry by the state of
California. Just Foam does not manufacture any chemicals onsite.

jacket also includes a hangtag which displays a photo, biography, and the ways a
customer can find out more about the featured artist, such as a web site or book.

“ACC has been part of the 686 collection for almost ten years and we’re very excited
to be working with Mark Hibdon and Jason Bump on the 2009-2010 project. It’s a
bonus to work with artists who have a strong snow background because they understand
the product from day one. Mark and Jason work exceptionally well as a team and have
produced some amazing pieces that transition into our line effortlessly,” said
Kristin Cusic, 686 V.P. of Marketing.

“We are really stoked to be included in the ACC project for 2010. Being asked to
create artwork for 686 outerwear and be in the same company as past ACC artists
like, Andy Howell, Shepard Fairey, Caia Koopman and Derek Hess is truly an honor. We
had a great time designing the pieces,” said Jason Bump, The Machine

OnTheSnow.com asked a wide-ranging group of industry leaders in North and South America, Europe, and Down Under to take their best shot at predicting what lies ahead in 2009. All of their responses can be read in their entirety at http://www.onthesnow.com/news/a/5279/worlds-ski-industry-leaders-take-on-2009-glass-is-half-full.

European leaders worry that the global economic downturn, combined with school holidays clustered closer together than usual, could combine into a visitor decline. “The domestic market will still be holding up, and the decrease from neighbouring markets Germany and France will be moderate,” Urs Eberhard, vice president for Switzerland Tourism, said. “But, we expect less visitors from Britain due to the 25 percent gain from the Euro against the pound in the past 18 months.”

Bernard Prud’homme, director of Chamonix Tourist Office in France, was more concerned about what lies ahead. “Winter 2009 should be a reasonably correct season, even though certain weeks may be more difficult to sell. However, Chamonix is aware that the economic climate will have more serious consequences on the summer 2009 season and the following winter season of 2010.”

North American industry leaders generally concur that “good weather” (read: snow) will be the determining factor for the rest of this season and the start of next. “Our view going forward is that, with good weather, most of the industry will be fine,” said Tim Boyd, president, of Peak Resorts, owners of small and mid-sized ski areas in the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic. “Good weather usually trumps everything else.”

The drop in gas prices couldn’t have come at a better time for “drive to” ski resorts, particularly in California and New England.

“Eighty-five percent of our market arrives by automobile. There has been a palpable sense of relief as gasoline looks to be snuggling in at under $2 a gallon for the 2009 winter,” said Bob Roberts, executive director of the California Ski Areas Association. “That said, the depth of our economic woes has us in unchartered waters.”

Economic factors and the lead-up to the 2010 Winter Olympics helps the glass stay half full, particularly at Intrawest Resorts, where Whistler-Blackcomb will play dominant venue roles. Intrawest owns resorts in Canada, Colo., N.J., W. Va., and Vt.

“The rapid strengthening of the U.S. dollar will encourage increased U.S. travel to Canada, while economically and currency challenged international guest visits will cause the industry to reminisce about international visitation peaks in 2006 and 2007,” said Bill Jensen, Intrawest Chief Executive Officer. “The 2010 Winter Olympics returning to North America (Vancouver/Whistler) will generate global aspirations for U.S./Canada winter vacations in future years.”

Bill Marolt, president of the U.S. Skiing and Snowboarding Association, completely agrees. “Media coverage and public awareness of skiing and snowboarding will be increasing over the next year with the excitement of a North American Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This event, coupled with the success of the sport’s superstars including Lindsey Vonn, Ted Ligety, Bode Miller, Hannah Teter, Seth Westcott, and Shaun White, among others, will heighten enthusiasm.”

The impact of the downturn has some worried that destination resort business will be hurt. Two Colorado leaders acknowledged that, but remained optimistic.

“There is no doubt that the travel and leisure sector is being, and will continue to be, negatively impacted in the short term; and while we have many attributes that differentiate us from other options guests may have, we are not immune to these negative trends,” says Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz.

Melanie Mills, president of Colorado Ski Country USA, a resort trade association, says she thinks Colorado will see “a strong year in 2009 with our local and regional markets with some softness in destination and international markets.”
Some resort owners need to keep watch on their properties from one end of the country to the other. That’s certainly the case with the industry’s newest power player – CNL Lifetime Company (a Florida-based R.E.I.T.) that owns 13 ski resorts and 8 mountain resort villages in the U.S. and Canada, all leased back to successful operators. CNL acquired Crested Butte, Colo.; Okemo, Vt.; and Sunapee, N.H., late in 2008.

CNL Vice President Steve Rice, while carefully watching other factors, hit on what many others believe to be overriding: “Sliding on snow is a fundamental human thrill popular since pre-historic times, in addition to being a healthful outdoor pursuit and means for family and friends to connect-the sport is not going away, provided we continue to find effective ways to attract and retain new entrants.”

The other side of the industry – those companies who manufacture and sell gear and clothing – have their eyes wide open. “This economic climate is a little bit different than we have experienced in the past as it is really a global issue,” says David Ingemie, president of SnowSports Industries America, a trade association of manufacturers. “So we are keeping a close look at the situation and the data as it develops. My guess is that we will do okay if we have a normal snow year around the country.”

The ski season is still six months out in the Southern Hemisphere, but leaders in that region have chimed in. “Thankfully, historical trends highlighted through SARS, the Iraq war, 9/11, and others, suggest our customers are somewhat more resilient and less risk averse than the average traveler. Not to mention addicted to snow in many cases,” said David Ovendale, general manager of New Zealand’s NZSki, trade group.

Miguel Purcell, gerente general at Ski Portillo, Chile, is taking a long-range view and is most concerned about the global warming issue. “We consider this to be one of the greatest challenges that we will face in the next 20 years. We are monitoring the situation closely and are doing everything that we can to help reduce the pollution that is producing global warming.”

Jack Turner, the inimitable creator of Snow Monsters, whose characters and efforts dominate children’s programming at many U.S. resorts, summed it up like this: “There will be major stress and uncertainty in 2009. We sell a product that is expensive, dangerous, inconvenient, and COLD. Those are the good points.”

Mountain News Corporation publishes the No. 1 visited snow-sports Website OnTheSnow.com, the leading summer Website MountainGetaway.com, and also The Industry Report which is directed to the most influential decision makers in the mountain travel and resort industry.

LionizePride.com: An Interactive E-Newsletter for Surfers

Sign-up, contribute content, and have it distributed worldwide for free

ORLANDO — NOVEMBER 5, 2008 — Lionize PR, an Orlando-based public relations and marketing firm specializing in the surfing community, today announces the launch of LionizePride.com. E-mailed to opt-in parties throughout the world, the e-newsletter’s content will be a combination of major news and reader submissions with embedded links if available. Sign-up and provide content at www.lionizepride.com.

“LionizePride.com is an avenue for publicity for those who can’t or don’t want to write a press release, don’t have the resources to pay someone to write one, or don’t know how to get it front of people who could read it,” stated Ryan Marks, president of Lionize PR. “While we’ll incorporate major news into the mix, I hope it will be utilized by the brands, the people and the organizations that could benefit the most from free publicity.”

Based on the concept that lions form social bonds called prides to hunt, educate and survive, LionizePride.com was born. By spreading the word about recent happenings, surfers have an avenue to contribute to the community instantaneously and have it broadcast worldwide.

“What I’ve found is that there is a ton of people who contribute to the surfing culture, but don’t necessarily have a medium to broadcast their successes,” stated Marks. “I want to give a voice to all those people in the most effective manner possible.”

E-mail is still the most effective form of marketing based upon studies by JupiterResearch with 87% of the online community spending their time reading e-mails. That is 17% more than the next most popular reason to use the Internet, which is for search.

Editor’s Note: For stickers, electronic images and samples contact Ryan Marks at 407.242.8548 or ryan@lionizepr.com.

Gagnon and Rodriquez capture gold

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

SEATTLE, Washington (November 3, 2008) – The capacity crowd at KeyArena experienced a textbook display of Skateboard Vert and Street skills when Pierre-Luc Gagnon (Montreal, Canada) and Paul Rodriguez (Tarzana, Calif.) skated to Gold medals on the final day of the LG Action Sports World Championships.

Gagnon repeated as Skateboard Vert LG World Champion, redefining the word ‘domination’ by claiming yet another major title in 2008. In a 5-run, 10-wall competition, he produced runs that contained only one blank wall as he turned out one banger after another. His 360-flip mute to fakie, which won him best trick earlier this season, amazed the crowd, and his technical board tricks racked up the points to bring him $30,000 to add to his winnings this year.

“It feels great to win the LG World Championships again. I’ve been having a great time all season,” said Gagnon. “I’ve been on the road and practicing a lot, riding everyday. When I get to competitions all the practice I’ve done helps make it seem almost like any other day.”

Winning Silver was good friend Danny Mayer (Omaha, Nebraska) whose kick flip 540, the hardest trick of the day, thrilled the crowd and gave him a firm hold on second place after his second run. Not more than three people industry wide can perform the trick with the technical skill of Mayer, making it no wonder that tonight he finds himself $20,000 richer.

Third place seemed like Bucky Lasek’s (Baltimore, Maryland) after producing a few solid runs, but, like his nickname describes, the “pitbull on wheels,” Sandro Dias (Santo Andre, Brazil) came through on his final run to overcome Lasek and win the Bronze. After losing it on his 10th wall twice in the two previous runs, Dias stuck his final run which included one of the highest 540s ever. It was enough to pocket the $10,000 third place prize.

The Skateboard Street contest rivaled the Vert competition in excitement when the top 8 men of a 14-man field took to the 6-foot drop staircase to show off their skills in the final round. For ten minutes of controlled chaos they pushed their limits and threw one trick after another, cranking the level of skill beyond expectation. In the end, ‘textbook perfection’ is what took the title; Paul Rodriguez (Tarzana, Calif.) earned the Gold with a score of 95.75.

“He’s a total machine,” commented the judges. “His switch stance is as good as most people’s regular stance, and tonight he landed twice as many tricks as his competition.”

“I went for some tricks I normally wouldn’t try, “ said Rodriquez. “You just do what you have to do to win.”

Greg Lutzka (Milwaukee, Wis.) captured second place and Rodolfo Ramos, the 2007 LG Skateboard Street World Champion, took third.

All of the action of the 6th annual LG Action Sports World Championships produced by ASA Entertainment can be seen on CBS Sports on Sunday, December 7th at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, December 13th at 1:00 p.m. and on Saturday, December 20th at 1:00 p.m. All times are Eastern. Local listings should be consulted for broadcast details in specific areas. The event will also air in more than 180 countries worldwide via 25 networks.
