LOS ANGELES, Calif. (June 24, 2008) – As one of the featured events during a week full of fun-in-the-sun at the GO211 Live festival and U.S. Open of Surfing at the famed Huntington Beach Pier, the Women’s Junior Pro returns to the surfing world’s competition line-up with a new title sponsor. The Supergirl Junior Pro will identify and celebrate the emerging stars in women’s surfing between July 18 – 26 when surfing’s top 18-and-under female surfers will take to the waves in their hunt for standing atop the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) junior ranks and their share of the $12,500 Supergirl Junior Pro prize purse. The finals of the event will round out the three-day, all-female action sports competition, the S3 Supergirl Jam, which is part of the GO211 Live festival and takes place from July 25-27.

“The Honda U.S. Open of Surfing is one of the most heavily attended professional surfing competitions in the world. We hope these girls inspire other young women to get out there and start surfing,” states Brodie Carr, CEO of the ASP.

As an element of the 2nd Annual S3 Supergirl Jam, the largest, all-girls action sports competition and lifestyle/music festival, the Supergirl Junior Pro also acknowledges and promotes female strength, independence and empowerment by creating another platform upon which today’s female athletes can compete.

“This event is important to young female competitors as they try to further their personal achievement and strive for their place among the ranks of the ASP,” said professional surfer and S3 Supergirl Jam host committee member Kassia Meador.

The last Women’s Junior Pro took place in 2006, with South Africa’s Nikita Robb receiving top honors and Karina Petroni (Atlantic Beach, FL), Coco Ho (Sunset Beach, HI) and Erica Hosseini (Newport Beach, Calif.) turning in memorable performances. All four women continue to compete in events on the World Qualifying Series (WQS), and Karina Petroni is currently the youngest competitor on the prestigious ASP Women’s World Tour. Along with Santa Ana’s 15 year-old Courtney Conlogue and Kauai’s Alana Blanchard, (other 2006 Women’s Jr. Pro notables) these women are listed on Surfer Magazine’s “Hot 100 to Watch in 2008”. The Supergirl Junior Pro gives young ladies like these the opportunity to celebrate their talents while recognizing their personal strength and confidence.

Supergirl Junior Pro will stream live via GO211.com and air as part of a 60-minute S3 Supergirl Jam telecast on network and cable television. Please stay tuned to s3supergirljam.com or check your local listings for more broadcast details.

An Open Letter to Mexico’s Congress on Shark Ecotourism

Monday, May 19th, 2008

MexiData.info note:

In April 2008, after marking up a legislatorial Point of Agreement regarding the “non-extractable exploitation of white shark at Guadalupe Island,” Mexico’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee of the federal Chamber of Deputies submitted its negative findings Point of Agreement to the lower house of Congress as a whole, where it now awaits action.

All of which relates to supervised shark diving (in cages) adventure and ecotourism activities that take place within Mexico’s Guadalupe Island Biosphere Reserve, located in the Pacific Ocean west of Baja California. Activities that the Mexican government, after due study and review, has authorized through the issuance of a limited number of federal permits to Mexican and foreign tour operators (plus the requisite permits vessel owners/operators or their agents must obtain).

Following a long introductory review and criticism (with a number of unsubstantiated and/or arbitrary “facts”), the Environment and Natural Resources Committee calls for the federal government not to authorize shark watching activities at Guadalupe Island, “insofar as it may not have been determined if these practices change the behavior of this species, creating a risk to its population, the marine fauna of the area, and local fishermen.”

As well, the Committee is calling for Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources, through its Attorney General for the Protection of the Environment and in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy, to carryout increased vigilance and oversight in the ocean area to insure that all of the rules and regulations in the 2005 decree, that designated the land and waters off Guadalupe Island a natural protected area, are followed. brt

March 11, 2008

An OPEN LETTER to members of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, Honorable Congress of the Union, Mexico, D.F.

Honorable Deputies of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee:

Carlos Ernesto Zatarain González

Esteemed Members of the Chamber of Deputies:

Several allegations have come to our attention regarding ecotourism activities of the white shark cage diving tour operators at Isla Guadalupe, Mexico. Your meeting minutes of April 3, 2008 state the following (translated):

1. “As well, it is mentioned that the techniques used by these tourist service providers in order to attract white sharks puts at risk the ecological balance in the area, the habitat and populations of this species, since their boats carry containers with sanguaza (blood of different origins mixed with water), and bait that they dump into the sea once near the island with the aim of attracting sharks in order to see them rise to the surface or jump. It should be noted that the sanguaza consists of blood from different origins, (which) could have been fishes, fowls or mammals, and in some cases (it) has the remains of entrails mixed with water.”

2. “These boats pour out the sanguaza at night so that the essence can remain in the sea, and the next day they can assure tourists (of) the presence of white sharks around this. Another of their methods, although it is utilized to a lesser degree, is the use of pinniped (sea lion, seal or elephant seal) shaped lures, combined with marine mammal oil, a situation that obviously violates federal legislation.”

3. “As has been mentioned, the practices used in order to attract these species are so inadequate that they have modified the behavior of white sharks in the area, as well as its local distribution. This change of its behavior will create a potential risk to the populations of sea elephant (Mirounga angustirostris) and Guadalupe fur seal (Arctocephalus townsendi), as well as abalone fishermen.”

4. “Regarding sanguaza, this must be considered hazardous waste and even potentially infectious, therefore its use to attract could result in the spread of pathogen agents or viruses that may be potentially infectious and harmful to the marine and terrestrial fauna of the region.”

We would like the opportunity to refute these allegations, and to speak directly with any members or deputies of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. What you have been made aware of at this pristine site is factually incorrect, and it does a great disservice to the overall positive efforts that this fleet, in good faith, has put forward within the Biosphere Reserve boundaries of Isla Guadalupe over the past seven years of operations.

If this site, and the fate of a large percentage of the Pacific’s white shark population, is to continue to thrive the actions you take in coming months will be a deciding factor. We ask that the esteemed members of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee come to understand exactly how these white shark operations are run, and how this fleet, on its own accord, has made great strides in building a long term ecotourism benefit for Mexico.

We stand ready and committed to working with the Mexican government in developing this site as a world class ecotourism and white shark research destination. These small steps have already begun at this site, and we would like to introduce you to them.

The Country’s Longest-running Action Sports Tour Returns for its 12th Year

LOS ANGELES (May 15, 2008) — ASA Entertainment (ASA), the country’s largest action sports event, television and content production company, is excited to announce its 2008 Action Sports World Tour events. From July to November action sports fans throughout the U.S. can experience the world’s top professional skateboarders, freestyle BMXers, inline skaters, snowboarders and freestyle motocross superstars during a series of five major competitions in a quest for the ultimate title, the LG Action Sports World Championships.

Huntington Beach, Calif. is the first stop on the Tour where more than 100,000 people are expected to watch the top female pro skateboarders, surfers, inline skaters and snowboarders compete at the
S3 Supergirl Jam from July 25–27. Part of this one-of-a-kind mega-competition includes the construction of a 28′ high snowboarding mountain with 30,000 pounds of snow pumped onto the beach at the world-famous Huntington Beach Pier.

Costa Mesa, Calif. hosts the first stop for the men from July 29-31, at the Orange County Fairgrounds. During three action-packed days, Southern California fans can enjoy a completely unique pro BMX competition that combines the best in BMX Box Jumping and Dirt Jumping with the Mini-Mega Ramp in an event called Big-Air BMX Triples. 16 of the world’s top BMX pros will participate in a head-to-head battle in what has become a favorite event for both fans and athletes after its inaugural contest last September.

The LG World Championships of Freestyle Motocross then thrills fans for one day in Los Angeles at Fairplex Park in Pomona on Saturday, September 27. Four-time LG World Champion Nate Adams (Phoenix, AZ) is eager to reclaim the winner’s podium in 2008, but he’ll have to ride through Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg (Santee, CA) who’s determined to defend his 2007 title with his series of distinctive motorcycle back-flip variations.

One week later, the Action Sports World Tour resumes on October 3 and 4 in Cincinnati, Ohio at the new Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. This will be the first sporting event ever inside the new arena and the last event for the pros to qualify into the LG Action Sports World Championships.

From November 7-9, 125 of the world’s most elite competitors in BMX, Skateboarding and Inline Skating will face off at the historic Reunion Arena in Dallas, Tex. for the 2008 LG Action Sports World Championships. This three-day battle for the season-ending World Championships will be filled with explosive, competitive action and A-list musical entertainment.
