Hines Gets Deep: Snags Billabong Freewave Challenge Gold
The results from the summer-long Mainland edition of the Billabong Freewave Challenge are rolling in. As expected, the combination of Jesse Hines, Hurricane Ike, and Outer Banks, N.C. ended up as the cream of the Best Barrel crop.
Billabong is on the hook to Hines for $3,000 as a result of his ghastly Outer Banks pit; Joe Cheshire, the man on the other end of the camera, will receive $750 for capturing the footage.
Geoff Moysa’s crisp Newport Beach barrel and Zander Morton’s up, down, and up again shack off the Gulf Coast of Florida, another product of Hurricane Ike, finished in 2nd($2,000) and 3rd($1,500) places respectively. Not too shabby a payday for spending a few precious moments in surfing’s holy room.
As sick as the footage of both Moysa’s and Morton’s waves were, this portion of the competition was essentially over the second Hines wave spit him out. The parade of hurricanes from mid-August on produced unreal surf along the East Coast and congratulations to Jesse Hines for being in the right place, at the right time, and for going all in!
