Kerby Brown’s Monster Oz Session
Not more than a short couple of weeks ago, Cory Lopez sent waves around the world when video of his mind-blowing 30 second barrel off of West Africa circulated the web with ferocity. Aussie surfer Kerby Brown and his crew have kept our viewing pleasure going with shots and video of a recent session in the Southern Ocean “somewhere between Margaret River and South Australia” on the southwest coast of Western Australia.

After sussing the video for the first time on surftherenow, I was left with a feeling of sheer disbelief and amazement at the level of insanity that surfing is being taken to. One of the waves ridden by the 25 yr. old Brown is being hailed as the largest wave in Australia this year and one of the heaviest waves ever recorded. It has also received a nomination for the Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards. Hearing Kerby describe the madness of being caught in a wave like this doesn’t do justice to the sheer massiveness of the beast. “I was lucky to get to where I got, I went straight over in the lip and did about 10 backflips and then pulled a muscle in my shoulder. It felt like I ripped my arm out of it’s socket, my leggie snapped and then I felt like I was the deepest I’d ever been (underwater). I took about 10 huge big strokes to get up and I was seriously struggling. I finally got to the surface and I was ready to pass out, luckily my brother was there on the ski.”
Check out the vid, and congratulations(I guess?) to Kerby Brown and his crew on another amazing session somewhere in West Oz
