@Kem

We need to do some more coverage, but check here:

http://www.fearbeneath.com/2008/09/volusia-county-22-shark-attacks-in-one-year/

We (sadly) expect number twenty-three (insert jim carrey pun) to happen before the end of the year; be certain that The Fear Beneath will raise a stink when/ if it happens. Let's hope it doesn't.

Volusia County attacks #20 and #21 happened at virtually the same time today.

Still no response from beach safety director Kevin Sweat.

[...] 5ones and the Fear Beneath both report on the attacks. Check the Fear Beneath for more detailed reports on the attacks. Too bad for surfers in the area because the Altantic is sending a slew of hurricanes there way right now. [...]

Have you ever seen the crowd at New Smyrna? The shark bites are a welcome form of crowd control.

A couple reasons for the high numbers of incidents involving sharks: the warm water, lots of tourists and relatively murky water. In the case of New Smyrna, the proximity to an inlet and extremely high numbers of surfers concentrated in that area makes for much higher than average encounters.

As for "whether it’s shark nets or any other harmless solution," - Shark nets are hardly a harmless solution. They kill lots of other fish and turtles.
