Shipwreck at Padang Padang Burned to It’s Frame
Having gone through a number of twists and turns since first washing up on the reef at Padang Padang several weeks ago, the shipwrecked Taiwanese trawler has essentially now been reduced to a scorched frame of itself as it was set ablaze by Bali police earlier in the week.
It’s been quite a roller coaster ride for the environmental disaster at Padang Padang, one that has seen any hopes of minimizing the damage crushed time after time. It has been a nightmare of a situation for all involved, and all that is left now is a skeleton of a ship that still needs to be removed. The R.O.L.E. Foundation in particular has been dealt blow after blow in their attempts to keep the damage to a minimum, and found themselves obviously very disappointed when the decision to ignite the ship via motive cocktail set the ship ablaze and increased the level of environmental damage that has already been done. Their efforts have been undone over and over by political, logistical, and financial measures, leaving them very frustrated in their attempts to make the best of a sad situation. “This is just one of the pressures the people of Bali are under. All of this environmental damage and disaster can go on right under everybody’s nose and they are powerless to do anything,” said Mike O’Leary (R.O.L.E. Foundation CEO).
Although the ship is now a stripped, burnt down mess there is still the need for the help with the clean-up. The best way of doing so is through the R.O.L.E. Foundation.

a bummer most definitely. although i understand the local government’s financial interests in taking care of the problem the way they have, it doesn’t sit well with me to think of the repercussions these actions will have on the environment. but what do you expect? blowing the boat up is cheaper than hauling it out piece by piece to get recycled!
