Review: SIMA Green Boot Camp and Board Retailers 2009 Conference

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Being Eco is an area the action sports industry is surprisingly falling behind. Recently SIMA held a green boot camp and Board Retailers Association had their annual conference. The trigger word played like a broken record “green”.

Lets start with SIMA. First, awesome that they have taken a lead in helping raise the importance of green awareness in our community. The panel was heated like a Jerry Springer episode and one not to miss. Some attendees were pissed that they felt the big dog panelists including Billabong and Volcom used being green more as a marketing ploy than actually caring about our very fragile earth. But lets be real. Everyone has their own initiatives. If at the end of the day action was taken small or large by people and companies to be Eco considerate that’s better than nothing at all.

At Board Retailers Association Frank Scura founder of the Action Sports Environmental Coalition spoke with his newly formed entourage including Quiksilver alum, Hurley, Element, and pro skater Bob Burnquist. He addressed “How sustainability and cause association will help your business to survive and thrive in a volatile economic climate.” I think he may be onto something. I’m not going to give away his secrets but if I were a shop I’d contact ASEC. He blew me away with his marketing and revenue strategies. Plus we’re only as strong as our team behind us right? He put together a team with all the expertise needed to actually make change happen effectively.

The challenge is IF not enough action is taken to impact both consumers and companies alike then all sides aren’t moved to either manufacture green, sell green or to buy green. So in order for the action sports community to really “save the world” we all need to be on the same page. Companies must step up to the plate and educate consumers how important and awesome it is to make eco minded purchases. They need to demonstrate to consumers that it is cool to be green. You don’t need to be a hippie. It’s as easy as reusing a water bottle. And consumers, start thinking about the powder you want to be riding, or perfect wave and how much it would suck if they were gone. The more we make eco purchases the more companies will be motivated to manufacture environmentally conscious products.

After all Stefanie Sekich from Surfrider Foundation pointed out that every piece of plastic since 1950 still exists. And a ton of it can be found in the middle of the ocean. So as you’re riding those sweet barrels in the morning enjoy tasting that ever so delicious plastic water.

Lots of Team Rider Changes

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

lizard kingThere have been so many team rider swaps lately that it was inevitable that I’d be giving you the scoop on the latest additions and removals.

First off, Lizard King is off the Circa Combat Division. Now, the Combat Division has always thrown me off a bit because they’re still part of Circa’s regular team, yet somehow segregated to a separate division. Anyways, no one knows who his current shoe sponsor as of late is but I highly predict that it’s going to be Supra! I’m calling it right now, Lizard King will probably the newest Supra rider. All of his homies are there, so why not?

CCS has added Scott Decenzo as its newest Am rider and they’ll also be announcing a new pro rider to their already packed roster. By the looks of the silhouette, I would say Benny Fairfax. But I could be completely wrong. He’s on a roll right now with his induction into the pro ranks and his recent win at Battle of the Berrics.

Joey Brezinski, Bob Burnquist, and Javier Nunez are all new Independent Truck teammates.

Leo Romero has split the Baker boys to join Ed Templeton on Toy Machine. This actually seems like a pretty good fit for the dude. Rumor has it, he had a foundation shape prepared for him previously for a pro model he was “supposed” to have. So expect to see that shape used on his Toy Machine deck.

Last but not least, Aaron “Jaws” Homoki skates for Birdhouse now. If you don’t know who that is, look him up and prepare to have your jaw dropped, completely. He is the definition of “Gnar”.

Skateboarding with Balloons

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

I’m sure a lot of you have seen the original balloon bowl stunt with Matt Beach a couple of years back. It was pretty epic and he surprisingly was able to skate perfectly fine with thousands of balloons engulfing him. And it now seems as if we have some sort of a balloon rematch going down with Bob Burnquist.

Skateboard cinematographer extraordinaire Ty Evans is the man behind the lens filming the whole deal. What I’m hearing it’s for a Aero candy bar commercial.

The progress is looking pretty darn awesome. Even the color of the balloons they chose is interesting. At times it looks so surreal that it almost looks like CGI, only it’s not.

All in all it’s a pretty cool visual effect and what’s expected of Bob to do, looks pretty tough. You can follow the video updates they put up through their YouTube channel. It’s definitely something unexpected and interesting to watch. It’s cool, uplifting, fresh, new, and Ty Evans is behind the lens so you know it’s going to be rad.

I know that the behind the scenes camera you see shooting everything isn’t really that great. But you can bet that the actual footage is probably being shot in HD, on an hvx200 or who knows maybe even on a full on Panavision camera.

Pretty entertaining if you ask me.
